WELCOME TO THE CLOSET
The Closet is a nonprofit thrift shop in the heart of historic downtown Herndon.
The Closet was founded in 1974 by a handful of churches to assist low-income families by selling used clothing at a nominal price. Over the years, our mission has expanded and we have become a significant resource for the greater Herndon area. We continue to be a source of low-cost clothing and household necessities for those on a tight budget. We also give away clothing to truly needy individuals and use our profits to support worthwhile community programs. Items we are unable to sell are donated to needy communities in the western part of the state.
The Closet sells a wide variety of donated items, including clothes and shoes; housewares such as dishes, kitchenware and linens; electronics; sporting goods; books, videos, cd’s and record albums; artwork and frames; toys; and knickknacks.
Collectors and antiques buffs like to check The Closet’s shelves for unusual books, plates and collectibles. Bargain hunters often find brand-new or never-used merchandise at a fraction of the retail price. On shopping days, eager shoppers begin lining up outside before the store opens.
To donate items, drop by on Thursday or Saturday. (See donation hours below.) You can help our small staff by donating only items that are in useable condition. We can’t accept some items because of space limitations or health department regulations. (Click on How to Donate for more details.) If in doubt, call us.
Last year, The Closet gave away more than $80,000 worth of clothing and necessities to needy persons referred by an authorized social service agency or one of our member congregations. We have donated more than $2 million to community groups and programs over the years. In 2006, we donated $31,661 to groups such as the Herndon Free Clinic and FISH and scholarships to students at five area high schools. We are able to do this because of community support in the form of donations, purchases and volunteer commitment.
We appreciate your continued support.
| JOIN US We encourage community involvement by offering residents the opportunity to donate and to volunteer. We are blessed with an abundance of donations and a coterie of devoted workers.
Except for about a dozen paid employees, most of our help comes from volunteers. Many represent one of our 19 member congregations in the Herndon, Reston, Sterling and Oakton area. Some are local middle and high school students earning their community service hours. Others are loyal shoppers who believe in our mission.
We’d love to have you join us behind the scenes. To volunteer, call The Closet and talk to manager Aaron Sawyer, or just stop by.
